A sweet and imaginative young girl in Poteidaia who felt the charismatic pull of the strong warrior princess who saved her village, the would-be bard followed after Xena, intent upon chronicling their adventures together. She left her parents, her loving sister and her somewhat boring farmer fiance after Xena saved her village from the warlord Draco. Not much of a fighter, Gabrielle is definitely a firm believer in talking one's way through things and in taking time to appreciate nature. Her gentle and joyous spirit work a strange magic on Xena's hard shell, allowing the warrior princess to discover the softer side of her own personality.
When Gabrielle tried to save an Amazon warrior from dying, she received the Right of Caste from the girl and became an Amazon Princess. From this tribe of southern Amazons, she learned how to wield a staff, eventually with some degree of proficiency. This began a new chapter in her life as she gained a new sense of personal identity. As her combat skills increased, she also came to understand her companion better, although Xena's life held more secrets than Gabrielle could imagine. Despite the opportunity to become Queen of the Amazons, Gabrielle passed the title on to her friend Ephiny, and continued traveling with Xena.
Throughout their adventures, Gabrielle was able to retain her blood innocence, even after Perdicas, whom she eventually married, was killed the morning after the wedding by the demented Callisto. But the saddest turn came in Gabrielle's life came when she was tricked into killing by a priest of the evil god Dahak who had chosen her to be the mother of his unholy child. After a startlingly rapid pregnancy, Gabrielle gave birth to a beautiful baby girl whom she named Hope. Although Xena could see that the child was pure evil, Gabrielle defended her peculiar child fiercely until she too had to accept its true nature. When she learned that Xena would die if she killed Hope, Gabrielle gave up her own life to destroy her child once and for all.
